Summary

Is there a correlation between brain size and longevity? Have these parameters evolved in parallel? What biologic mechanism do they rest on? What influence may the brain have on longevity and what are its mechanisms? And conversely, what may be the influence of longevity on the brain and its functioning? The fourth symposium of the Fondation IPSEN devoted to longevity tried to answer these questions, both at the level of the species and at the level of contemporary human populations. It followed on from the first symposium which was devoted to the limits of human longevity (1996), and the other two on the paradoxes of longevity (1998) and sexuality, gender, reproduction and parenthood (1999). Each theme adopted by the Fondation IPSEN has allowed the organization of a multidisciplinary team, including anthropologists, biologists, demographers, epidemiologists, geneticists, physicians, nutritionists, and sociologists... for the best scientific debate.
